It’s discomforting to realize sometimes
that I only know how to pray when I am in trouble
or when I am in dire need.

And more often than not,
they consist mostly of complaints, hatred,
criticisms and disapprovals.

Like I can do a better job than Him.

But can you blame me?
I am only human.
I am tired.
I am tired of reaching out.
I don’t think He really listens to me.
It’s no fun when you don’t get any answers.

But when I really think about it,
if I would be at the receiving end,
I would not even listen to me.
I couldn’t care less of all my whining and selfish wants.
If I was Him, I would be annoyed by the mere sight of me.
Always the negative.
Always the irritating.

All I have is my music.
It’s the only thing that keeps me sane.
It’s the only thing I truly need.

But ever since the Lenten Season started this year,
I have been singing this song repeatedly.
It’s a song we used to sing back in High School.
It’s one of the many songs by Bro. Mike Lapid,
and this is definitely one of my favourites.

Then I realized,
that the reason why this song was stuck in my head,
is that maybe,
just maybe,
He was trying to reach out to me.

And it’s embarrassing to know,
that the only one here
not really paying any attention,

is me.

  1. Hello po! It’s been a while since I posted a comment here pero I do check your blog weekly. =)

    I still have the mp3 of I Love You that you sent me a year ago. Ginagamit nga po namin yun ng choir ko to rehearse for Mass. It is my most favorite Christian song of all time. Salamat po uli for sending me that. May mga panahon talaga na we feel He is not there, so songs like this are wonderful reminders that He is never absent, ever.

Bro, you know, this song is one of the best songs that Mr. Lapid composed, together with The Lord is my strength, death gives birth to life, you’re my everthing, etc.; as part of the Salesian family, i’m very glad that you made this song accessible to the greater majority…but no offense bro…i though your intro is not 100% exact…from C going back to G…But at least the arrangement is novel and good, and i like the voice…hehehe! Anyway, that’s the least i can say to it…in any case you did a great job…cge bro.

    I was one of the few people who was personally there when the song was played for the first time in a mass. I was a combo member of DBTC at that time, we play during the First Friday Mass at the gymnasium, I accompanied Bro. Mike Lapid – he was playing the piano, I was on guitars when the song first came out. I am happy, I still know the whole song.

    Have no news of him anymore, glad if someone could help me get in touch with him. actually there are other songs I witnessed being played for the first time:

  69. I was surprised when a classmate of mine from college posted this song to my Facebook wall. I haven’t heard this song in 25 years and by listening to your rendition was really touching and brings me back to memory lane. I have personal admiration and profound respect to Mike Lapid and his musical talent is unbelievable. His arrangements could relate well especially to the young that I remember because of his songs people would be drawn to go to mass just to sing it. His lyrics are very inspirational and filled with love. Next January we would host the DBTC annual grand high school reunion in the occasion of our class silver anniversary. I would like to suggest to use all Bro. Mike’s compositions in our grand homecoming reunion mass because these were the songs that we used to sing during our senior year. If it’s not to much to ask, can you send the mp3 copies and music sheets of all of his songs that you have? (e.g. “I Love You”, “You’re All I Have”, “You Are Everything”, “I Need You Lord”, “Up Where We Belong”,”Ito Ang Aking Katawan”,”The Lord Is My Strength”). I am even surprised that some of you have requested songs that I have composed long long time ago. I doubt that Ty would still know these songs as they were not taught at DBTC.
