Speaking of Generations.
You know how every generation is given a name?
You know?
The Baby Boomers,
Generation X,
Generation Y,
Copy-Paste Generation,
Prince and the New Power.
Anyway, I got a whiff of what the kids are calling themselves these days.
They seem to call themselves,
“The Entitlement Generation.”
A lot of them feel that everything should be given to them,
without them giving any sacrifice
or going thru the value of hard work.
They feel that they have the right to have everything.
Are they wrong about this?
Is it the Parent’s fault?
It may be hard to see when you live in a world where
you can see their generation, getting into more and more trouble?
Have you seen these kids who can manipulate the internet
and get a whole world of information at the age of 7?
5th Graders talking on their own cell phones?
High school students having easy access to ammunition?
A lot of them refusing to get summer jobs, or get any experience or even save money
for they intent to live at home as long as they can?
I don’t see kids giving respect to their elders anymore.
Whatever happened to manners?
A lot of them would rather get a Sun tan than a Sermon on Sundays.
I don’t know.
I must be getting old because
I can’t stand these kids sometimes.
Walking down the street,
Strutting into malls,
With their backwards hat and their low hanging pants.
Thinking that they were the coolest thing that ever came in this world.
You can’t help but shake your head when you see these kids roaming around your streets.
You can’t help but question whatever happened to society.
Generation of Entitlement?
Yeah, sure.
How about Generation WTF?
My sentiments exactly…
We are the entitlement generation? I’m 26 and I can tell you I’ve worked every summer since I’ve been 16. Not all paying, ranging from internships to babysitting gigs. I went to college and grad school worked my ass off for my grades and for as much paying work as I could. I don’t expect things to just float my way I’ve been volunteering in my profession since I’ve graduated yet still can’t find even part time employment in my field. And you shake your heads at us. Why? Because when we come out of college we try find work that’s willing to pay us a living wage. You say we don’t work or save money because we want to live at home for as long as we can….have you seen how much rent costs? Trust me I want to move out much more than my parents want me to. Just can’t afford to without steady work.
I don’t strut down the street and I certainly don’t wear my hat backwards. I do think I’m pretty cool though. I respect my parents and I respect those who respect me. As for Church, nope don’t go, don’t care, I follow my own path.
But you know entitlement is a funny concept…..why don’t we talk about those who feel that because they worked their whole life that they should have Social Security benefits, a pension, or Medicare. Or all three.
Or how about people who feel that after decades of loyal service at one company and a few short years before retirement when they get laid off deserve a severance package.
Oh and there is this one, people who feel that they should be entitled to a house with no money down and the value that property will always rise.
These are not the entitlements of twentysomethings, but they are the entitlement of other generations.
Please don’t stereotype my age group, we work hard and we don’t feel any more entitled to a good life than yours or your parents generation.
Hello Pearl.
First off, I would like to thank you for taking the time to visit my site and for your comment.
I see how passionately you are over the topic. Much thanks to you.
Second, you have mentioned that you are 26. I hardly consider that as a “young kid” nowadays.
At that age, you must have contributed to society in one way or another.
Like you said, “You worked your ass off” with your internships, volunteering and such.
Good for you! You are a select few. You know the value of “hard work”
Your parents did a great job.
How do you feel about those who didn’t have to work hard like you did
and have everything they want and not put it to good use?
How about the ones that refuses to work and depend on government grants,
which by the way comes from the taxpayers hard work,
And a lot of them still complain about it?
Not only that, they blame everything else too.
The economy is bad. No one is safe from it.
But that shouldn’t affect ones attitude towards the betterment of one’s self, right?
And I know how much rent cost. I moved 7 times in the last ten years. I know how it is out there.
I know it’s bad. Especially in places like New York.
I have never met you but I am sure you are pretty cool.
I am glad you don’t wear your hat backwards, or strut down the street.
That is a little disturbing for a 26 year old to do.
Religion and beliefs is something I will not discuss.
I am sure you, just like me, do not appreciate when other people shove their beliefs down your throat.
Also, I did not produce the “Entitlement” name.
It was actually an 18 year old who proclaimed that that is what they are.
That kid’s parent is the one who actually told that story and it bothered me quite a bit.
In conclusion,
I think that all of us, no matter who, what or where we are,
should get the “entitlement” we deserve.
It’s when the system is abused and taken advantage of,
That’s where the problems lie.
–Thank you for your comment Pearl. I meant no offense to you personally.
I appreciate your time and for writing your opinion.
