I would like to tell you about a process called
“Distributed Computing.”
I know its a little technical term,
and it has “Boring” written all over it.
But if I could just have your attention for a minute,
I would like to share with you how this can be a great thing.
First.
Your computer.
Your computer has a Processor (CPU).
It is a vital part of your system that can perform
billions of calculations under a certain amount of time.
Now imagine how technology has become
since the old days of CPU architecture.
They have been faster, cheaper, better, and accessible.
Your games have never been more awesome,
Your applications have never been more exciting.
Second.
Imagine multiple computers,
Calculating for one single purpose.
And let’s say that that purpose is for a good cause.
Even though one computer can fulfill that purpose,
it will definitely take a significant amount of time.
Now with multiple computers,
connected through the internet,
distributing the load process across,
is definitely a big help.
Now, what if that purpose,
is to simulate possible methods in understanding
and possibly finding cures for diseases?
Wouldn’t that be a good cause?
Wouldn’t you like to help?
The Chemistry Department at Stanford University,
has developed a software that people can run on their machines,
to help with the distributive process.
(I’m almost done, I promise)
Now if you have a computer that you pretty much leave running 24/7,
you can install this program to do some background process,
and submit its own share of load.
It doesn’t take over your CPU, it just uses it at a minimum.
You can even install one on your Playstation 3 game console.
I have it running on my home computer,
my work computer,
my co-worker’s computers (I installed it on their PC, but they don’t know that)
And even on my Game console.
I am not rich to be able to donate a lot of money for charities or research,
but I still want to help.
And this is one thing I can manage to do.
Hey, I would like to see a cure for cancer.
At least in my lifetime.
I strongly suggest that you take some time
to think about how much this would help the cause.
And no I don’t work for them nor get any endorsement fees.
